re-issue of the 1978 dub classic from errol brown & the revolutionaries. dub like it used to be from the high note and gay feet labels. a selection of rocking rhythms from the revolutionaries masterminded by jamaica’s finest female record producer, mrs sonia pottinger, and mixed by duke reid’s nephew, errol brown, chief engineer at the legendary treasure isle studio.

in 1982, a group of friends deep into post-punk, jazz and dub got together in mad professors studio and lay down their youthful interpretation of a nyc disco cut. their unique take included trombone, vibraphone, piano, and an ital dose of tape delay. they called the song trouble and released two versions (vocal and dub) on their friend tony mcdermott s !drum! label with artwork inspired by russian constructivism. tip! . the group, comprised of justin langlands, chrysta jones, john schofield, tom dixon, and dave killen, decided to call themselves a-team, having no idea that mr.t and co. would make them almost totally ungoogle-able 30 years later. the result of their adolescent studio idealism sounds akin to otherdisco misfits like arthur russell, maximum joy, talking drums and wouldn t sound out of place on legendary nyc label 99 records. remastered with an extended club dub formaximum dance-floor action.

the 70s saw a growing interest in so called dub versions, an approach based on deforming, stripping and rebuilding the original tune and came known as dub music. king tubby along with other dub wizards such as, lee perry & prince jammy, were responsible for this exciting new dimension to jamaican music. however, most of these dub albums were pressed in very small quantities and disappeared quickly. one of those albums is dub expression by errol brown and the revolutionaries. no gimmicks on this one, he uses simple echo and delay, a few vocals sliding in and out, separate instruments floating on top, with respect to the melody of the tunes. a mixture of dub and instrumentals. enjoy these super tracks!

keeping true to the yin/yang approach of his 12inches, martianman gives you a glimpse into his ever-expanding universe with the release of vol. 3. the impenetrable pads of ion storm strike the dark and uplifting in equal amounts. disembodied chants and deep bass tremors give way to a thunderous amen break, while hallucinatory synths swirl throughout the madness, just beyond reach. an intergalactic barnstormer in signature style. tracy’s grunt, meanwhile, is built around a simple jazz loop, dripping with melancholy, backed in stark contrast to a loose, clattering funk kit. in ital comfort quickly becomes a beautiful descent into madness, where steady rhythms decay into warped electronics and bad-trip samples. a vividly painted lucid dream.

one of the very first artists to begin recording in jamaica, derrick morgan is beloved as a ska icon and a pioneer of the ‘skinhead reggae’ style. blessed with a rich, deep tenor, which with he belts out his clever and often humorous lyrics, morgan became known on the kingston music scene through vere johns’ regular talent contests, and enjoyed a lengthy run of hits during the 1960s for producers such as simeon smith, duke reid and clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd (among others), cultivating a popular vinyl feud with prince buster after being brought into leslie kong’s camp by the young jimmy cliff. morgan moved to england during the late 1960s to capitalise on the skinhead reggae craze, but was back in jamaica from the early 1970s, and since bunny lee was his brother-in-law, the two have always maintained a close working relationship. people decision, voiced at king tubby’s studio for lee and released by third world in 1977, sees morgan in politicised roots reggae mode on songs like ‘let’s build a better jamaica,’ the symbolic racetrack drama ‘racing at ballistic park,’ and the title track, which all boosted the socialist policies of the ruling people’s national party, ‘natty dread forward out of babylon’ updates the ‘tougher than tough’ saga, and there’s a slew of rude tunes when you flip the disc, including ‘my dickie,’ ‘rough grinder’ and ‘ride manny fanny.’

a renowned producer from the barcelona scene, pedro vian has taken a significant step forward in his career with the creation of modern obscure music. from this platform he is able to shape his vision of today’s electronica, releasing material from likeminded artists while creating his own sound, combining silky dance rhythms with an experimental approach and dark atmospheres. so far vian has collaborated with artists like alex trochut, ital, hieroglyphic being, sunny graves and federico sancho, among others. pedro vian is the new alter ego for pettre, who has already released tracks on hivern and for several years was one half of the duo aster, the exciting project whose house music still echoes in the eardrums of its fans. this time pedro vian presents black toms ep, a new release accompanied with inga copeland and pye corner audio reinterpretations. the publication of this record will be in mid june. cover photographs by adria cañameras

sleeper cell is the new collaboration between earthen sea and lovers rock label head ital. recorded over three days and nights in a dark ny winter, * quality of life* reflects a declining america in a winter of its own. corroded dub atmospheres, haunting melodies, subdued flashes of tenderness and occasional searing noise swim together like murky oil in a puddle of grimy water on the side of the road. opening with the entrancing * initiate* , * sleeper cell* welcome the listener into their world, where menacing whispers dance and echo around synth swells and a poignant lead melody. from there, the duo journey through a crumbling and eerily spacious sound world.

another recent masterpiece from the rising barcelona label “modern obscure music”. this time the label is introducing a 12’’ with two long lasting analogue jams made from synthesizers like moog voyager and the mythical juno 80 on abstract rhythms created with a powerful roland 909. this is an essential record for collectors of relics focused on the club. to the mysterious, exotic and even tribal vibe, the record label adds a remix by daniel martin-mccormick, best known as ital, who has recently published his 3rd album with mike paradinas (planet mu) apart from also presenting some pieces from his own record company lover’s rock or in the prestigious workshop house. remixes by jmii and pettre, aster’s ex-band components, are also added in the digital version of it.

studio one dub 2 is a second collection bringing together some of the finest dubs from the legendary studio one records, kingston, jamaica. dub music was the creation of a generation of brilliant recording studio engineers in jamaica. but although clement coxsone dodds studio one is hailed as the greatest of the jamaican recording labels, and although many talented engineers worked the board at dodds brentford road studio over the years (including sylvan morris, syd bucknor, overton scientist brown and dodd himself), studio one was never typically known as a centre for dub.

after a lengthy break from the electronic music world, genotype is back with an lp for exit records and provides a lesson in stripped back dub influenced music at approximately 170 bpm. having started his music career in the mid nineties under the legendary alias just jungle, with releases on the massively influential labels of that era such as trouble on vinyl, renegade hardware and reinforced records, its no surprise that he has managed to capture the essence of rawness in his recent music akin to the early years of jungle. many producers have tried and failed to bring back the old skool sound with an original flavor but genotype has managed this by resisting the temptation to lash in the tired old classic breaks and instead has drawn for the more organic sounding percussion and drum kits. the dubbed out theme runs throughout the album paying homage to his love for west indian music which he has been involved in for many years and naturally influences the music he creates. genotype is a man of few words and prefers to let his music do the talking so check out the album and draw your own conclusions.

fans of burial mix and grayhound best listen up, cause the boys from succulent have come to mash up the hi-fi wit tha wicked dub, man. all three of their pieces use that unbelievably deep sub-bass that made their track on grayhound bug everyone out. pair that to masterful use of effects and proper ly placed samples of rasta mcs and you got that deep down, below the root line, damn its dark, kinda undaground dub shit that worship seem impossible to not do right. then the masters at the dub-house sound, solomonic sound, rework >freshly< into a sub-aquatic fun house of dubbedout bass wicked percussion all wrapped in spacey sounds. big, fat & totally necessary for any self respecting dub/house dj.

wieder einmal taucht die englische plattenschmiede soul jazz records tief ab in die archive von studio one records, dem wohl beruehmtesten reggae-label. -studio one dub 2- vereint einige der schoensten dub-versionen von songs wie marcia griffiths -feel like jumping-, sound dimensions -real rock- und -declaration of rights- von den abyssinians. in den spaeten 1960er-jahren begann studio-one-labelbetreiber sir clement coxsone dodd die b-seiten seiner singles mit einer instrumentalversion fuer djs zu versehen, damit diese ueber die original-rhythms toasten konnten. versehen mit echo, hall und verstaerktem bass wurden diese dubs bald genauso beliebt wie ihre originale. bald darauf begann dodd mit seinem soundmixer sylvan morris eigene dub-alben mit innovativen dubs und mischtechniken zu veroeffentlichen. auf -studio one dub 2- finden sich jetzt stuecke dieser alben sowie einige klassische versionen der urspruenglichen singles.
